Put a bird on it

Last weekend I found this awesome print at the fabric store. The photos don’t do the colors justice as it looks just like blue on blue, but the background is actually kind of a warm grey and the birds are blue and turquoise. It’s one of those color combination that just delights me to the point where I can’t stop looking at it.

What pattern should I use with it? I was thinking maybe Mail Order 4936, my “no bows allowed” dress, as the neckline feels like a fun casual summer dress. I could probably add some matching or contrasting piping along the edges too.

I feel like I should make something out if it right away though so I don’t psych myself out and end up never using it. Do any of you ever do that — love some fabric or yarn so much that you hesitate to ever use it then wait so long that you become paralyzed? I currently have about 30 yards of fabric I have waited so long to use I’m afraid to cut into now. I’m trying to break myself of this ridiculous habit.

Then again, I guess that’s where deadstock vintage fabric comes from, neurotic seamstresses who died before they ever got the nerve to cut into their precious fabric. Deadstock, I love you, but I won’t be creating any more of you.

So what do you think? What kind of dress does this bird fabric want to be?
